Since taking the oath of office in January 2011, Sheriff Evangelidis has been committed to running the Sheriff’s Department based on the mission of professionalism and public safety. Sheriff Evangelidis has significantly increased the hiring standards to the highest in the field of corrections in the Commonwealth, and currently is the only Sheriff in Massachusetts that does not accept political contributions from employees or their spouses - promoting a more professional department and better working environment for all Sheriff’s Office employees.
SHERIFF LEW EVANGELIDIS HAS KEPT THESE PROMISES TO THE RESIDENTS OF WORCESTER COUNTY:
Changed a long-standing culture of politics and patronage and transformed it into an agency focused on public safety and professionalism
Will never accept campaign contributions from employees or their spouses
Raised the hiring standards to the highest in Massachusetts requiring an associates degree or military service
Removed the Sheriff's name from all department vehicles
Advocated for and opened a brand new mental health/ medical/ receiving facility located on the jail grounds to effectively address substance-misuse, mental heath and co-occurring disorders of inmate population
Advocated for and implemented significant increases in employee compensation for civilian and correctional staff
Facilitated the creation of nationally accredited and recognized education, vocational and substance treatment programming
Revived dormant agricultural land on jail grounds into a 14 acre organic farm. Producing 40,000 pounds of fresh organic produce each harvest season, feeding both the inmate population and helping the less fortunate throughout Worcester County
Created two different shelter dog programs at the Sheriff's Department
Tripled the inmate community service program. Saving Worcester County communities OVER 8 million dollars in work projects completed while providing inmates with reentry skills and the dignity of giving back to the community
Created partnerships with local colleges to assist inmates with educational and vocational skills
A leader both behind the walls of the jail and in the community
